I’ve loved photography almost my whole life. It started with this older man in my hometown when I was about 14 years old. He had this old Kodak camera and he took the most amazing pictures of flowers, plants and people. His house was lined with framed pictures… on the walls and stacked on the floor. A few years later, when I was 19, I had a friend at my first ‘real job’ who also took pictures as her passion. She would always show me the work she did, I found it beautiful and amazing. That is what sparked my passion that has now become a home-based business and second-love (after my family).
I bought my first SLR in 2002. I practiced on my son, who was just over a year at the time. I taught myself by practicing, reading, failing (and failing…did I say failing? lol) Let me tell you, there is no greater school than practical experience and a little elbow grease. I’ve learned so much by trial and error, and the past 7 years are invaluable to me. Besides the practical work, I took many evening classes in Grande Prairie at a developing business and also at the college.; I also took a B&W developing course in Peace River.
After that, I had my daughter and took a couple of years off to spend all my time with her. Now that she’s a little older, I’ve slowly gotten back into photography. However, it seemed that during those years, everything changed from film to digital. So I took the plunge and bought a DSLR and have never looked back…I love it!! I work out of my home and rent the community hall for my studio work. Since a lot of my work is done outside in natural light, my clients often call me at the last minute for their booking. This is a huge advantage of living in a small town. I love my family, community and taking pictures…what more could a woman ask for?
